In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded & released "Time Out," one of the best-loved and top-selling jazz albums of all-time. Five years before that landmark album, American pianist Dave Brubeck had already been on the cover of Time magazine. The recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, Brubeck was also presented with the Benjamin Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. As this award s very first individual recipient, the State Department wrote that ''as a pianist, composer, cultural emissary and educator, Dave Brubeck's life's work exemplifies the best of America's cultural diplomacy." Don Hunstein's portrait of Dave at the keys, capture's one of America's foremost jazz diplomats in a moment of contemplative cool.
