In the late 1960s Charles Lloyd was a legitimate jazz star, and for a time, his star shined the brightest. His quartets music, daring and complex yet unpretentious and accessible, was adored by jazz and rock fans alike. Forest Flower was Lloyds initial key to success in the United States. Even in its most experimental sections, the piece remains invitingly warm. Lloyds shimmering arpeggios cover the entire range of his horn, yet his playing remains lithe and light. Jarrett contributes an ingeniously constructed solo, fleet- fingered and lyrical. The communication between him and DeJohnette is telepathic, hinting at what would come years down the road.
