To celebrate the rebirth of the label, a host of former Blue Note stars assembled for a historic concert at New Yorks Town Hall in 1985. The group led by Lloyd reunited him with Petrucciani, his pianist from the early 1980s, and McBee and DeJohnette, members of his classic 1960s quartet. Tone Poem is a circular and hypnotic two-chord vampthe perfect setting for Lloyd to both ground himself in melodic diatonicism and extend the harmonic framework of the piece when he so chooses. Petrucciani and McBee contribute excellent improvisations and DeJohnette is interactive as evermotivating yet remaining complementary and empathetic.
